Upwork Tax Calculator — Estimate Your Freelancer Taxes
By Sanjeet Singh, CPA
Upwork takes their fee. The IRS takes their cut. This calculator shows you what's left and what deductions help.
Upwork freelancer tools often treat 1099 income as standalone. Qalm shows Upwork earnings in context of your W-2 job and other income, so you plan for the right tax bracket and quarterly estimate.

How Upwork Taxes Work
Upwork is a freelance marketplace — and as far as the IRS is concerned, every freelancer on Upwork is a self-employed independent contractor. Upwork doesn't withhold taxes from your earnings. When a client pays you through the platform, you receive the full amount (after Upwork's service fee), and you're responsible for setting aside money for taxes and paying the IRS yourself.
As an Upwork freelancer, you owe self-employment tax at 15.3% of your net earnings (after expenses). This covers Social Security (12.4%) and Medicare (2.9%). At a traditional W-2 job, your employer pays half of these taxes — on Upwork, you pay both halves yourself.
On top of SE tax, you owe federal income tax and state income tax at your marginal rate. If you also have a W-2 job, your Upwork income stacks on top of your salary in the tax brackets.
For example, on $50,000 of net Upwork income (after expenses and Upwork fees) as a single filer with no other income: approximately $7,065 in SE tax plus roughly $4,100 in federal income tax — about $11,165 total before state taxes.
Upwork's Service Fee as a Deduction
Upwork charges freelancers a service fee on every contract. The current fee structure is a flat 10% of your billings. On a $5,000 project, Upwork takes $500 as their service fee.
This service fee is a deductible business expense. When calculating your taxes, subtract Upwork's fees from your gross billings to get your actual income. If your clients paid a total of $60,000 through Upwork and the platform took $6,000 in fees, your gross business income for tax purposes is $54,000 (before your other deductions).
Upwork's 1099 Reporting
Upwork sends a 1099-K form to freelancers (and the IRS) if your gross earnings through the platform exceed $5,000 during the year. The 1099-K reports the gross amount — before Upwork's service fee is deducted.
This means the number on your 1099-K will be higher than what you actually received. When filing your taxes, you report the gross amount as income on Schedule C and then deduct Upwork's fees as a business expense. The net result is the same — you only pay tax on what you actually earned.
Even if your Upwork income is below the 1099-K reporting threshold, you're required to report it on your tax return if your net self-employment income exceeds $400 for the year.
Common Deductions for Upwork Freelancers
Beyond Upwork's service fee, here are the expenses most Upwork freelancers can deduct:
Software and tools. Design software (Adobe Creative Suite, Figma, Canva Pro), development tools (GitHub, cloud hosting, IDEs), writing tools (Grammarly, editing software), project management apps, and any other software you use for client work.
Equipment. Laptop, external monitor, keyboard, mouse, webcam, headset, microphone — anything purchased for or used primarily in your freelance work. If the equipment is also used personally, deduct the business-use percentage.
Home office. If you have a dedicated workspace used regularly and exclusively for your Upwork freelance business, claim the home office deduction. The simplified method is $5 per square foot, up to 300 square feet ($1,500 maximum). For many Upwork freelancers who work from home full-time, the actual expense method may yield a larger deduction.
Internet service. Your internet bill (or the business-use percentage of it) is deductible since Upwork requires an internet connection. If you work from home and estimate 70% of your internet use is for business, deduct 70% of the monthly bill.
Professional development. Online courses, certifications, conferences, books, and workshops that help you maintain or improve skills used in your Upwork freelancing.
Health insurance premiums. If you're self-employed and not eligible for coverage through a spouse's employer, you can deduct health, dental, and vision insurance premiums as an above-the-line deduction.
Retirement contributions. A SEP-IRA allows contributions up to 25% of net self-employment income (capped at $70,000 for 2025). A Solo 401(k) offers similar limits with additional flexibility. These reduce your taxable income while building retirement savings.
Business insurance. Professional liability insurance (errors and omissions), especially relevant for consultants, developers, and designers working on high-value projects.
Accounting and legal fees. Costs for tax preparation, bookkeeping software, and any legal services related to your freelance business.
International Considerations for Upwork Freelancers
Upwork connects freelancers with clients worldwide. If you're a U.S.-based freelancer working with international clients, here's what you need to know:
Your tax obligation is based on where you live, not where your clients are. U.S. freelancers owe U.S. taxes on all income regardless of the client's country. Upwork handles the payment in U.S. dollars.
If you're a U.S. freelancer living abroad, different rules apply — the Foreign Earned Income Exclusion (FEIE) and Foreign Tax Credit may be relevant, but these are complex situations that warrant professional tax advice.
Upwork collects W-8BEN forms from non-U.S. freelancers and W-9 forms from U.S. freelancers to determine withholding obligations. As a U.S. freelancer, you provided your W-9 when you set up your account.
Quarterly Payments for Upwork Freelancers
If your net Upwork income will result in owing more than $1,000 in federal taxes (after any W-2 withholding from a separate job), the IRS expects quarterly estimated tax payments.
The four deadlines are April 15, June 15, September 15, and January 15. Pay through IRS Direct Pay at irs.gov/directpay — select "Estimated Tax" and Form 1040-ES. It's free and takes about five minutes.
The calculator at the top of this page estimates your quarterly payment. Enter your gross Upwork billings, Upwork fees, other business expenses, any W-2 income and withholding, and your filing status. The calculator gives you your quarterly amount and set-aside percentage.
A system that works: set aside your tax percentage from every Upwork payment into a separate savings account. When contract payments clear, immediately transfer the percentage. This turns quarterly tax payments from a stressful event into a routine transfer.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much should I set aside from my Upwork income for taxes?
The exact percentage depends on your total income, expenses, filing status, and state. As a general range, most Upwork freelancers should set aside 25-35% of their net income (after Upwork fees and business expenses). The calculator on this page gives you a personalized rate based on your actual numbers.
Do I report my Upwork income before or after Upwork's fees?
On your tax return, you report gross income (before fees) on Schedule C and then deduct Upwork's service fees as a business expense. The net result is the same — you only pay tax on what you actually received — but the IRS wants to see both numbers. Your 1099-K will show gross amounts, so this matches.
What if I also have a full-time W-2 job?
Your Upwork income stacks on top of your W-2 salary in the tax brackets. Your employer's withholding covers part of your total tax, but not the portion from Upwork income. You'll need to make quarterly estimated payments on the gap — or increase your W-2 withholding to cover it. The calculator on this page factors in W-2 income and withholding.
Should I consider an S-Corp election as an Upwork freelancer?
If your net Upwork income consistently exceeds $60,000-$80,000 per year, an S-Corp election can save significant money on self-employment tax by allowing you to pay yourself a "reasonable salary" and take the rest as distributions (which aren't subject to SE tax). However, S-Corp elections come with added costs — payroll processing, additional tax filings, and accounting complexity. The S-Corp savings calculator on this site can show you whether the savings outweigh the costs at your income level. Reasonable salary determination requires professional review.
Does Upwork withhold taxes?
No. Upwork does not withhold taxes. You receive the full payment after their service fee, and you are responsible for paying taxes.
Can I deduct Upwork service fees?
Yes. The fee Upwork charges (up to 20% on the first $500 with each client) is a deductible business expense on Schedule C.
Do I need to pay quarterly taxes on Upwork income?
If you expect to owe $1,000+ beyond any W-2 withholding, yes. The four deadlines are April 15, June 15, September 15, and January 15.
